Exciting Partnership: UC Berkeley's Terner Housing Teams Up with Misura Group

Affordable Housing Solutions: UC Berkeley's Turner Housing Innovation Labs Partners with Misura Group

Misura Group and the University of California-Berkeley's Terner Housing Innovation Labs invite you to sign up to receive an important new report from these collaborating institutions on how manufacturing can make housing more affordable.

The Misura-Terner white paper, to be published in late 2024 or early 2025, will examine both the opportunities and the challenges inherent in building houses out of components manufactured in factories rather than assembled by hand on job sites.

The white paper springs from the unique talents that the authors bring to the project:

  • Misura Group’s decades of experience bringing talent solutions to Off-Site Manufacturing has a strong network of industry partnerships to drive innovation, shaping the insights presented in the white paper.

  • Terner Housing Innovation Labs at UC-Berkeley bring together entrepreneurs, experts, and investors devoted to finding innovative ways to fundamentally and equitably improve the housing market.

“We have wanted to partner with Misura Group ever since we read Tony Misura’s analysis of why Entekra failed,” said Tyler Pullen, a Senior Technical Advisor at Terner Labs. “Working with Misura Group and their network of executives has brought a new level of exposure and expertise to our efforts.”

“We are immensely grateful for the invaluable contributions of our component industry leaders. Your willingness to share insights and innovative solutions has been instrumental in advancing our collective goals.

Collaborating with UC-Berkeley Terner Housing Innovation Labs fits naturally into what we do,” Misura Group founder Tony Misura said. “We have been working with some of the best component manufacturing leaders for years, and with their help, have gained a deep understanding of the supply chain and what works—and doesn’t work—in construction. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Terner’s group of tech founders, nonprofits, academics, and community-based executives to tackle one of America’s biggest challenges: Building affordable housing.”

Housing prices have risen significantly this decade. There are many reasons why, among them labor shortages and inefficient construction methods. Assembling building components in factories and then bringing them to the jobsite can improve productivity and reduce overall construction costs, as well as a better, more energy-efficient home.

Support for offsite construction has suffered recently due to high-profile failures at companies like Entekra and Katerra. However, these setbacks have overshadowed the broader, vibrant industry that continues to produce essential building components such as trusses, floor panels, wall panels, and pre-cut framing packages.

Misura and Terner’s white paper will address the Entekra and Katerra cases, while also explaining why the underlying concept remains the most effective approach to making housing accessible and affordable. The paper will provide insights and solutions that can help create a successful playbook for policymakers and homebuilders.

Pullen describes housing affordability as “an incredibly complex and dynamic problem impacted by misaligned local and federal regulations, home builder consolidation, plodding productivity increases, rising construction costs, and the industries relationship to the construction labor workforce as its aging out, and choosing alternative career options.” Collaborating with Misura Group, he said, “has proven to be incredibly impactful, gaining insights from some of the brightest progressive leaders in the industry.”
